Alberta voters overwhelmingly reject starting a process toward independence

Alberta voters chose to remain in Canada in a referendum held on Monday. With more than 1 million votes counted, about 76% backed staying in Canada versus 23% for beginning a process toward separation, and CBC projected a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney and supporters of Canadian unity. On Tuesday, the BBC said the result gives Carney political capital to focus on remaking the economy and strengthens his hand against Trump.

• About 76% backed remaining in Canada and 23% backed beginning a separation process, with over 1 million votes counted.
• Voters had been asked whether Alberta should remain in Canada or hold a second binding independence referendum.
• The campaign exposed divisions, including within the separatist movement.
• The BBC says the outcome gives Carney room to focus on the economy.
