Israel locks down West Bank and razes part of Hebron after soldiers killed

Israel began a full lockdown and military operations across the occupied West Bank on Saturday, after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Hebron. Hebron's municipality says about 1,500 people were evicted from the Ein Deir Baha district and 35 hectares destroyed or marked for destruction, and Netanyahu vowed 'to destroy this place'. The Israeli army has also announced movement restrictions on Palestinian workers and crossing closures ahead of Tuesday's election.

  • The UN said it was extremely alarmed by the intensifying violence and sweeping closures.
  • The World Food Programme has halved its aid to displaced West Bank Palestinians.
  • Settler attacks on Palestinian farmers continued during the olive harvest, and an Israeli court freed nine settler suspects on Thursday.
  • In Gaza, where nearly 75,000 people have been killed, four more Palestinians died in Israeli attacks on Thursday.
