Drone strike kills at least 21 at Nyala market as famine warnings grow

On Monday evening a drone strike hit a market in the north of Nyala in Darfur, killing at least 21 people and injuring 40, according to a resident. On Tuesday the US, EU and 30 other countries warned of famine risk in Sudan and urged the warring parties to lift all impediments to aid. A year after the Rapid Support Forces captured El-Fasher, at least 6,000 civilians are reported to have been killed as the RSF entered the city.

  • RSF drones struck five power stations in Al-Jazira, Gedaref and White Nile states on Monday, causing outages across large parts of the three army-held states, an official said.
  • The UK imposed travel bans and asset freezes on commanders from both sides suspected of sexual violence during the El Fasher siege.
  • A drone strike killed at least four people last week in Bamina, Chad, and hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees have crossed into Chad.
  • In Khartoum, soaring food prices force families to borrow money and skip meals, and millions of children are out of school.
