Iran says it is ready to return to war as reports point to possible US action after midterms

On Monday, Iran said it is preparing for a possible US and Israeli attack after the US midterms, while President Trump said there would be no strikes on Iran that day. Iran warned that renewed attacks will "achieve no different outcome". Reports also described tension in Israel over Iran policy, and UN chief António Guterres urged dialogue in Cairo. Talks between Washington and Tehran have failed, and each side blames the other.

• Israeli media reported on Sunday that military chief Eyal Zamir demanded written authorisation over fears of escalation. Netanyahu denies any confrontation, and on Monday the defence minister denied a rift.
• Per an official and a person briefed on the matter, Netanyahu pressed in recent days for a separate action short of an overt strike.
• Iranian hardliners opposed to negotiations are turning against President Pezeshkian over the US talks.
• US Central Command says more than 3,000 commercial vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz with its support, and trade officials warn the war is raising fuel and fertiliser costs in Africa.
