Kyiv says Russian aerial bombs killed 18 at aid centre as Kherson truce ends

Kyiv says at least nine 3,000kg aerial bombs hit a village in southern Ukraine on Monday, killing 18 people at an aid centre, and local officials say 27 people are missing. Fighting returned to the Kherson region after the war's longest ceasefire expired on Sunday evening. The truce had allowed hundreds of residents to leave Russian-occupied Oleshky, and the World Food Programme is now giving hot meals to more than 400 evacuees.

  • Ukraine's air force says its national air raid alert app was probably hacked minutes after the truce ended, and Russia reported a hack of its own emergency alerts app, with each side blaming the other.
  • Russian state media say Ukrainian drones set fire to the Kstovo refinery in Nizhny Novgorod region after a major strike on a Rosneft refinery in Samara region. The Kremlin says Kyiv is ignoring US wishes.
  • Russian strikes left thousands without power in Ukraine on Sunday, and the UN is pushing to restore electricity before winter.
  • On Saturday, Erdogan hosted Zelenskyy in Istanbul and the two agreed to work on a new Black Sea grain corridor.
