US midterm results begin to come in after Tuesday vote for Congress and governors

Americans voted on Tuesday for senators, House members and governors in midterms widely seen as a referendum on Trump's agenda, and results are now being tracked across all 50 states. Also on Tuesday, the justice department sent target letters to a Democratic election lawyer and other Democrats over an alleged scheme to put a man with the same name as Republican senator Dan Sullivan on the Alaska ballot, a step described as unusual so close to election day. On Monday the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's bid to block California from counting about 20,000 ballots that the Justice Department says come from non-citizens.

• The Supreme Court ruled against the administration on Monday after lower courts had sided with California officials, who said the federal government was interfering in state elections.
• A judge ordered the administration on Saturday to stop threatening election officials who had received letters demanding that ballots of possible non-citizen voters be set aside.
• More than 50 million early votes had been cast before election day, a record.
• Californians also voted on Proposition 40, a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of residents with over $1 billion.
