Democrats win the House and Senate in US midterms, flipping key seats and governorships

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to results reported overnight into Wednesday. Al Jazeera reports a Democratic House majority, and Democrats also took the Senate, which gives them leverage over Trump's legislative agenda and appointments. On Wednesday morning Trump said Democrats had done a good job and acknowledged the Iran war may have contributed to Republican losses, but did not take personal responsibility.

• Democrats flipped Senate seats in Texas (James Talarico over Ken Paxton), North Carolina (Roy Cooper), South Carolina (Annie Andrews), Ohio (Sherrod Brown over Jon Husted) and Maine (Troy Jackson over Susan Collins), and held Georgia and New Hampshire.
• Democrats won governorships in Texas (Gina Hinojosa over Greg Abbott), Ohio (Amy Acton over Vivek Ramaswamy), Georgia (Keisha Lance Bottoms), California (Xavier Becerra) and New Mexico (Deb Haaland). Republican Byron Donalds won in Florida.
• Democrats won three of the four Florida House districts Republicans redrew this year and narrowly lead in the fourth.
• Incoming House oversight chair Robert Garcia told Trump and Republicans to 'lawyer up', and Senator Ron Wyden signalled subpoenas.
