Democrats win key Senate and governor races on US midterm election night

Results came in on Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Democrats won Senate races in North Carolina, New Hampshire and Georgia, and Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected Georgia governor. Democrats also won three of the four Florida House districts Republicans redrew this year and narrowly lead in the fourth, while Republican Ashley Moody won Florida's special Senate election. Voting was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's agenda.

• Roy Cooper beat Michael Whatley in North Carolina, the first Democratic Senate win there in 10 years. Chris Pappas won in New Hampshire over John Sununu, and Jon Ossoff was re-elected in Georgia over Mike Collins.
• Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson and is described as the first Black woman elected governor in US history.
• On Monday the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's bid to block the count of about 20,000 California ballots that the Justice Department says come from non-citizens.
• On Tuesday the Justice Department sent target letters to Democrats over an alleged scheme to put a man with the same name as Republican senator Dan Sullivan on the Alaska ballot.
