UN criticises Israel over Hebron displacement and Gaza as West Bank operation continues

On Monday, a UN commission report said Israel continued to commit genocide in Gaza after last October's ceasefire, which Israel dismissed as part of a "misinformation campaign". UN rights chief Volker Turk said the Hebron operation, which has displaced more than 3,000 Palestinians, must end, calling collective punishment a grave violation of international law. The operation followed the killing of two Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near the city on Friday. Israeli forces also killed at least five people in Gaza on Monday, after seven were reported killed there on Sunday.

  • Hebron municipality says 35 hectares were destroyed or marked for destruction and about 1,500 people evicted from the Ein Deir Baha district; Netanyahu vowed "to destroy this place".
  • Israel began a full lockdown and military operations across the West Bank on Saturday, and the army says it will restrict Palestinian workers' movement and close crossings for Tuesday's election.
  • The reported death toll in Gaza is 74,555, including 1,559 killed since the ceasefire last year.
  • An Israeli air strike on Sunday killed three security guards in one of two attacks on the Islamic University in Gaza City.
