Diplomacy continues after deadly Russian strikes on an aid site in southern Ukraine

Russian strikes on a southern Ukrainian village on Monday, hours after a rare six-day Kherson-region ceasefire expired, killed at least 26 people, including civilians collecting humanitarian aid. The toll was later reported as 29 dead with 48 missing, and Ukraine says at least 38 were killed in 24 hours of attacks. On Tuesday, diplomacy dominated: Zelensky met Chancellor Merz in Berlin ahead of trilateral talks with Russia and the US in Abu Dhabi, and Russian and Ukrainian delegations are due to meet Melania Trump at the White House on Thursday.

• Kyiv says at least nine 3,000kg aerial bombs hit the village; overnight strikes also hit power plants and a hospital, with at least 73 injured.
• Russian strikes on Dnipro killed two and injured 20, damaging homes and several medical facilities.
• Merz says Russia has yet to engage seriously in peace efforts, while Zelensky hopes the Abu Dhabi talks lead to a meeting with Putin.
• Canada says Russian skaters cannot compete in a world junior hockey championship there next month, and the ice hockey federation restated its opposition to Russia's return after the CAS ruling.
